The concept of physical education is not new. In fact, physical education has its roots in the ancient period although it was used in various forms in the past. Since the existence of man on earth, his physical activities have been active. At that time, all his power was limited to food, clothing and housing, but as the physical and mental development of human gradually grew, his activities changed and his priorities also changed. Human began to specialize in every field.
The meaning of physical education is very broad. It includes not only competitive sports but also recreational activities, recreational sports, health and fitness activities, camping, remedial exercise, etc. It is an integral part of the total education process. Physical education not only helps in physical development but it also helps in mental, social and emotional development of an individual. Physical education is an education that helps in the overall personality development of a child.
Career Opportunities in Physical Education
Teaching Career in Physical Education :-
There is a lot of career opportunities for Physical Education Teachers in field of education. They can start their career according to their choice or qualifications. Whatever be the branch of education, be it Elementary School, Middle School, High School. Senior Secondary School. Be it college or university. There are career opportunities for physical education teachers everywhere.
Teaching in non school settings, such as teaching in sports clubs, teaching in youth and community organisations, teaching in centres for elders, teaching in resorts etc., are applicable in USA, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Russia. In India, fewer job opportunities are available in this field as compared to other countries.
Aim Of Physical Education
The aim of physical education is the wholesome development of an individual or it can be said that the aim of physical education is complete living. In fact, the aim of physical education is an Apex point which seems to be out of reach. In general, ‘wholesome development of an individual’ is the aim of physical education and this same can be achieved step by step. These steps are called objective. So, it is said that the aim is one but objectives may be many.
According to the Ministry of Education and National Planning of Physical Education and Recreation, “The aim of physical education must be to make every child physically, mentally and emotionally fit and also to development in him such personal and social qualities which will help him to live happily with others and build him up a good citizen.”
H. Clarke mentioos only three objectives of physical education.
1. Physical fitness
2. Social efficiency
Leslie has mentioned the following five objectives of physical education.
1. Organic aspect of development
2. Neuro-muscular aspect of development
3. Emotional aspect of development
4. Social aspect of development
5. Intellectual aspect of development

A life-time involvement in physical activity is being promoted which could enrich the lives of people both young and the old, male and female, healthy and people with special needs. During the previous decade many changes have taken place in the field of physical education. It has become a multi-dimensional discipline.

Graduates of any discipline can pursue masters degree in in any Indian or foreign universities.
